Restaurants In Ireland

As you can see from the list below, the restaurants that I have reviewed below are mainly located in Dublin since that is where I am from. I've added a few other retaurants that I am familiar with on the west coast, so anyone that has any recommendations to make, please e-mail me and I'll be sure to add to the list below. In terms od tipping. Don't necessarily feels that you must tip 15 % like in the US. Tipping is the norm, and I would say 10% is generous if you liked your meal and your expectations were met. If you felt you really had the ultimate dining experience and the staff was great, then go for the 15%. It's up to you.

One little piece of advice,  look at the menu carefully to see if there is a service charge added automatically. A couple of place that I have been to will add on a service fee, and when you get the bill , still leave a place for a tip ! This really annoys me, I've noted one such restaurant that does that below. Typically on parties of 6 or more, you can expect a 10% service charge.

Check out the Pub section aswell where you will get pub lunches. These are excellent value !

Restaurants

The Bistro

4 & 5 Castle Market , Dublin 2
Tel:01 671 5430
Fax:01 677 6016

This is a great little restaurant, probably my favourite in Dublin when you want the balance of price and quality. The Bistro is great for both lunch and dinner. Entrees are about £10 each, and a bottle of house wine will cost about £11.

Open daily 11.30am-11.30pm (Sun to 8pm). Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.

Brownes Townhouse & Brasserie

22 St Stephen's Green , Dublin 2
Tel:01 638 3939
Fax:01 638 3900

Brownes is a really popular place in town. My experience here is that you will have to book in advance. The food is excellent , and the atmosphere more formal than say the Bistro. The style of food is French, however the appetizers and entrees are of a generous size. The menu offers a wide choice of dishes suited to the brasserie style: a pleasant, conveniently located restaurant.

Entrees are about £17 each, and a bottle fo house wine will cost £15.

Chapter One

18/19 Parnell Square , Dublin 1
Tel:01 873 2266/2281
Fax:01 873 2330

Here you wil find creative cooking which is classic French (chicken veloute with chives & rocket) overlaid with contemporary influences (grilled swordfish with beetroot risotto, fennel puree and chive vinaigrette); menus are always based on first class seasonal ingredients and have a pleasing leaning towards New Irish Cuisine (crepinette of pork with potato confit, glazed apples, cabbage and sage).

You'll can have a wonderful selection of Irish cheeze after your meal which was great. The wine list is extensive and the prices reasonable. House wine is about  £15. Entrees about £17-£20. Again, book in advance , this place is busy !

Eden

Meeting House Square, Temple Bar , Dublin 2
Tel:01 670 5372
Fax:01 670 3330

Situated in the vibrant Temple Bar area, the Bistro is a must go.

Seasonal menus make use of organic produce where possible ands lunch menus change weekly. Salmon tartare with crème fraîche and paprika, spicy lamb meat balls with lemon rice and tomato sauce, sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce are all typical of the style. Again, portions are very generous, and any time that I have been there I have found the fish entrees fantastics. The restaurant is neatly laid out, and you can see all the hustle and bussle in the kitchen as the staff freshly prepare your meal. Good balance of quality and price. Entrees about £13, and house wine £13. Good idea to book in advance, especially during peak season.

Gotham Café

8 South Anne Street , Dublin 2
Tel:01 679 5266
Fax:01 679 5280

Situated just off Grafon St. this place in lively, and quite busy. Great for Pizza,  salads, lasagne etc. Great for lucnh when you've been shopping on Grafton St. House wine £9.75, lunch for two about £18, not including the wine.
Johnnie Fox's

Glencullen, The Dublin Mountains , County Dublin
Tel:01 295 5647
Fax:01 295 8911

This is a neat place and remotely situated outside of Dublin. If you are unfamilar with Dublin, call in advance to get directions. This place is up in the mountains overlooking the city. Great for lunch and meals in the summer. It more the atmosphere and the place itself that is the attraction, although the food is excellent aswell. Lunch for 2 , £25 including a couple of pints.
The King Sitric

East Pier, Howth , County Dublin
Tel:01 832 5235/6729
Fax:01 839 2442
E-Mail:info@kingsitric.ie

Situated outside of Dublin in Howth which is on the DART line. The King Sitric will take you 25 minutes from the city centre by DART. The food is excellent and I've always chosen from the Dinner Menu, which has never been dissappointing. Prices are similar to that of Brownes above. If you love Fish then the Sitric is one restaurant you should try.
La Mere Zou

22 St Stephen's Green , Dublin 2
Tel:01 661 6669
Fax:01 661 6669
E-Mail:merzou@indigo.ie

Right in the centre of Dublin on Stephens Green, La Mere Zou is a real French style restaurant. Great value, a little too compact for my liking but worth a visit.
L'Ecrivian

109a Lower Baggot Street , Dublin 2
Tel:01 661 1919
Fax:01 661 0617

Everything is good here, seafood, lamb, beef, game in season etc. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and the restaurant spacioud and comfortably formal. L'Ecrivian is one of the premier restaurants in Dublin , and dinner for two with wine , appetizers etc. will cost about £100.
La Stampa

35 Dawson Street , Dublin 2
Tel:01 677 8611
Fax:01 677 3336
E-Mail:dine@lastampa.ie

A popular spot for business people , as it is located right in the centre of Dublin (again just off Stephens Green). I went there only once, and wasn't overly impressed. The reason why: I thought the portions were small and overpriced, certainly relative to some of the other retaurants above. If a formal setting is more important than the food and price, then try here ! Diiner for two- £110-£120.

Pub Food

While In Dublin, pub lunches are great. You'll find excellent quality food for about £6, and you might as well make this the main meal of the day as Irish pub lunches are quite large. You can expect a breast of chicken, large fillets of fish, bacon and cabbage, lasagne etc. The following places I think are great for lunch in Dublin:

O Neills Pub

2 Suffolk Street , Dublin 2
Tel:01 679 3656
Fax:01 679 0689

Davy Byrnes

21 Duke Street, Dublin 2

(just off Grafton St.)

The Old Stand

37 Exchequer Street , Dublin 2
Tel:01 677 7220
Fax:01 677 5849

The Duke

Duke St, Dublin 2.

(Just off Grafton St. )
